Following its success adapting a scathing look at British politics for House Of Cards, Netflix appears to be targeting the royal family next. The company is close to a deal for The Crown, a new series from Peter Morgan and Stephen Daldry.

The show would be based on the pair’s celebrated 2013 play The Audience, in which Helen Mirren reprised her role as the Queen, but played her at various ages through the years as she interacted with the Prime Ministers who have come to power during her time on the throne.

Exact details on the show have yet to be announced as the deal is still being made, but Morgan and Daldry would both be involved, producing the series with Andy Harries, Robert Fox and Matthew Byam Shaw, backed by Sony Television. Whether Mirren would return to play the Queen, and indeed how closely the series would follow the format of the play are not known, but we can certainly see the appeal of her appraising various world leaders as she meets them.

Morgan last wrote Rush and has worked once more with Ron Howard on Heart Of The Sea. He also has TV mini-series The Lost Honour in production. Daldry is editing his latest film, Trash, written by Richard Curtis and Felipe Braga.
