With one TV series already under his belt – that would be Netflix’s creepfest Hemlock Grove – Eli Roth has another small screen project he wants to pursue. He’s attached as a producer and will direct the pilot for US cable channel WE tv’s South Of Hell.

Writers Matt Lambert and The Shield’s James Manos Jr. came up with the concept, which will track a young demon hunter in Savannah, Georgia. So far, so Supernatural. But here’s the twist: the main character is Maria Abascal, a 30-year-old hunter who goes around exorcising demons, whilst fighting her own inner creature, a nasty piece of work named Abigail who feeds on the evil her host removes from others.

“I’m thrilled to be a part of South Of Hell," Roth says in a statement picked up by Entertainment Weekly. "Exorcism and possession stories have always fascinated me, and Matt Lambert has created an incredibly rich, original world in which to tell many stories of good, evil and everyone’s own personal inner demons."

With low-fi horror guru Jason Blum aboard as a fellow producer, the show will produce an initial order of eight episodes to air next year. There’s no word yet on whether a UK broadcaster will pick it up.
