He's in early talks for the lead role in the car pic
Aiming to put the disappointment of last summer’s Ant-Man departure well and truly behind him, Edgar Wright has been channelling his energy into realising a long-gestating passion project, with music-fuelled car thriller Baby Driver now revving its engine again nicely. He appears to be close to finding a lead, with The Fault In Our Stars’ Ansel Elgort in early talks.
Variety also reports that Wright’s Working Title partners have struck deals with TriStar and MRC to finance the film, which means that Sony will be handling distribution in the US. And with that nugget of information comes something much more interesting: a clearer sense of the story.
Baby Driver will chronicle the high-speed, musically influenced life of a young getaway driver, who grooves to his personal soundtrack on jobs to keep him at the top of his game (think Drive meets Wright's stylish filmmaking). But when he’s coerced into working for a crime boss on a doomed heist, his entire world is put into danger.
Elgort is now close to the part, a role that has been reportedly chased by the likes of Logan Lerman and John Boyega, who appeared in the Wright-produced Attack The Block and is now in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. As for Elgort, he’ll next be seen in The Divergent Series: Insurgent, which is out here on March 20.
