Now Overstock Is Launching A Video Service

Netflix, Amazon and co. have a new competitor

Netflix. Amazon. Hulu. Sony PlayStation. There are so many video streaming services around at the moment it does make you wonder whether the market can handle another one. Still, the people behind Amazon-esque online store Overstock think it can, and are planning to launch their own service, at first in the US, later this year.

Similar to Amazon’s effort, the company will tie the service into its loyalty programme, currently priced at $20 a year. Initially, the plan is to offer video on demand, with a streaming service targeted for the end of the year. “We already have the traffic,” said Byrne. “We’re looking for a bigger and bigger share of their wallet. We’ll be a competitor to Amazon – we think our loyalty program is better than Amazon's. We give you five to 25 percent back on what you spend. So we pay people back for their digital downloads.”

It’ll be a tough road to compete with the established services – newcomers in the UK and US have found it difficult in the face of the main company’s growing success in both buying up catalogues from studios and TV channels and creating their own original content, such as House Of Cards and Transparent. Still, streaming services have definitely taken hold as a primary source for movies and TV, and you can expect other competitors to arise. At this point, we wouldn’t be that surprised to see Rumbelows rise from its corporate grave and announce it was getting into the business.
