The Purge: Anarchy shoots into second
To almost no-one’s surprise, last week’s box office champion, Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes, repeated the trick for a second weekend at the top. The Apes se-prequel (pre-sequel?) took in $36 million this weekend, down roughly 50% but still more than enough to stay dominant in the face of new challengers, all of whom are currently supplicant, holding out a paw for Apes to swipe in a sign of forgiveness.
Matt Reeves’ film is now standing at $138.9 million in the US alone, with more than $171 million globally and plenty of territories left to open in thanks to delays from the World Cup. The success meant that the strongest challenger, action horror sequel The Purge: Anarchy, made do with second place, earning $28.3 million. Given its $9 million budget, expect The Purge 3: Total Bloody Chaos to be announced shortly. Third place went to the family film entry, with another sequel, Planes: Fire & Rescue scooping up $18 million. The DisneyToon Studios production was a little down from last year’s original, which earned $22.2 million on its opening weekend and went on to gross more than $219 million globally.
Fourth place was the critically mauled Jason Segel / Cameron Diaz comedy Sex Tape. The raunchy wannabe-romp managed $15 million, a disappointing start given its $40 million budget. Transformers: Age Of Extinction dropped several places to fifth, adding $10 million for $227.1 million in the States. While it’s definitely not performing like its franchise fellows in the US, the global box office is strong, so we can expect at least another film.
Tammy was also knocked down a few pegs, with Melissa McCarthy’s comedy falling to sixth place and $7.6 million. 22 Jump Street slipped to seventh with $4.7 million and How To Train Your Dragon 2 made $3.8 million in eighth place. At ninth, we find Maleficent adding $3.3 million and Earth To Echo fell to 10th, putting $3.2 million in its piggy bank.
