The Toronto International Film Festival kicks off once again in September, and has now announced a batch of the films that will premiere or screen there. Among this year’s crop? Jean-Marc Vallee's Demolition, Ridley Scott’s The Martian and Tom Hooper’s The Danish Girl.
Demolition, which stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Naomi Watts, is scheduled to open the event, and we can also expect the likes of Stephen Frears' Lance Armstrong biopic The Program, Peter Sollett’s Freeheld, which features Julianne Moore and Ellen Page, and Cary Fukunaga’s Beasts Of No Nation, which stars Idris Elba, was bought by Netflix and will show there once its festival run is complete.
Films scoring galas including Kray twins drama Legend, which has Tom Hardy playing both lead roles and Jay Roach’s Trumbo, featuring Bryan Cranston as the blacklisted writer. Denis Villeneuve’s drug war thriller Sicario will follow its Cannes debut with a North American premiere at the festival.
A more surprising entry is a film few knew was even being made, with Michael Moore bringing his latest poke into politics and morality, Where To Invade Next, about the US government’s war machine. "I don't think there's any one trigger,” he says of the film’s inspiration. We've all been living in this time, certainly post-9/11, and everything that's going on in this country, in this constant need to always have an enemy – where's our next enemy? – so we can keep this whole military industrial complex alive, and keep the companies that make a lot of money in business. So I've always been a little bothered by that, and so that's where the comedy comes from.”
This year’s festival opens on September 10 and runs until September 20. For full details on screenings, point your browser of choice at the official site.
