It was just a couple of months ago that word broke about Chris Pine entering talks to join Warner Bros./DC’s Wonder Woman film as Steve Trevor. The Wrap reports that the ink has been spilled and the deal is official.
Which means Pine will join the stand-alone film in development for 2017 starring Gal Gadot. Trevor, in case you don’t know his comic book history with the lasso-happy Amazon, was an intelligence officer in the US Army during World War II whose plane crashed on Paradise Island. There, he was nursed back to health by princess Diana, and love blossomed between the two. Diana returned to his more mortal existence with him, taking on the mantle of Wonder Woman and her everyday alter ego, Diana Prince. The character debuted at the same time as the heroine in All Star Comics issue eight, published in December 1941.
The role, as directed by Patty Jenkins, will be considerably more active than Steve tends to be in the comics, though the actual plot elements of Jason Fuchs’ script are still tightly wrapped up. Expect to see more of Pine in the DC movie universe following his debut, as he’ll likely have signed on for at least a couple of films. He’s currently shooting Star Trek Beyond in Vancouver and will be seen in The Finest Hours (out January 29 next year) and Z For Zachariah, which has yet to secure a UK date. He’s also part of the sprawling cast for Wet Hot American Summer: First Day Of Camp, which arrives on Netflix this Friday.
