We’ve long been conditioned by the likes of Jaws and, er, the Sharknado films to view sharks as the big threat in the ocean. But what if you stir in the extra danger of drowning far from the surface? That’s the central idea for the new thriller 47 Meters Down, which has just added Matthew Modine to its cast.

The film follows the misadventures of two sisters, Kate (Claire Holt) and Lisa (Mandy Moore), who are enjoying the holiday of a lifetime in Mexico. When they’re offered the chance to go cage diving to see Great White sharks in the wild, Kate dives in with both feet while Lisa needs a little bit of cajoling. But she signs up and soon they’re two hours off the coast of Huatulco, face to fang with some of nature’s deadliest creatures. Bet you can’t guess what happens next…

…That’s right, the cage breaks free from the boat and goes plunging down deep underwater. Soon the women are trapped in the depths with less than an hour of oxygen left and sharks between them and the boat above. Let’s hope they’ve watched Deep Blue Sea a few times. And perhaps Open Water. Or maybe they were better off not.

Johannes Roberts, who co-wrote the script with Ernest Riera, is busy directing the film, having already gathered footage in London and now utilising Pinewood’s water tank in the Dominican Republic. The Tea Shop & Film Company is backing this one, with Dimension Films picking up rights for the US. The international rights are on sale now, so expect it to hit UK screens once a distributor is locked down.
