Like Bob: The Musical (more on that one here), it appears the job of directing book adaptation The Rosie Project is now an open assignment, since Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who had been developing it, are now throwing their full concentration towards a Han Solo film. So who could take over the job of directing Jennifer Lawrence in the lead? Sony wants Boyhood’s Richard Linklater to do it.
Written by Graham Simison, the book tells the story of professor Don Tillman, a genetics expert on the Asperger’s scale who never seems to be able to land a second date. He starts The Wife Project, working up a questionnaire to find the perfect partner, but is instead entranced by the free-spirited Rosie (Lawrence), who matches none of his criteria but might just be his soul mate. The book has been big both here and in Australia where it's set, and a sequel, The Rosie Effect, arrived last year. (500) Days Of Summer writers Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber have written the most recent draft of the script, which attracted Lord and Miller before the lure of Star Wars took them in another direction.
According to Deadline, it’s early days in terms of potential contract talks. Linklater most recently finished a college baseball film formerly known as That’s What I’m Talking About (it’s currently untitled, though the IMDB lists it as Everybody Wants Some), which has just secured an April 2016 release in the US.
