A new Disney family comedy
It’s been a while since Steve Martin has dipped a toe into the waters of family comedy – we’re not counting The Big Year – yet while DreamWorks Animation has him set for voice duties in next year’s Home, Disney wants him back in front of the camera for Magic Camp.
The Mouse House is developing the comedy based on a draft by Gave Sachs and Jeff Judah, and recently re-written by Martin and Stu Zicherman.
Martin is now also close to a deal to star as a straight-laced banker who returns to the magic summer camp he attended as a shy child. This time, he’s back as a counsellor who decides he’s going to make the current attendees’ lives that much better while keeping one eye on winning the Golden Wand competition. It’s up the actor’s alley as an early job was working in Disneyland’s Magic Shop and he mixed magic with comedy in his younger days as a stand-up.
The next step for the film will be to find a director to bring it to life. Home, meanwhile, in which he plays the egotistical captain of a race of aliens who decide to conquer Earth, is set for release in the UK on March 20 next year.
