Chris Hemsworth Travels To The New Vacation Movie

Charlie Day also on board the sequel/reboot

Though it hit a serious road bump last year and had to go into the development garage for some script rewrites to sort out a disagreement on the tone, New Line’s planned hybrid sequel/re-set/whatever of the Vacation franchise is back on the streets with Ed Helms and Christina Applegate starring. Chris Hemsworth and Charlie Day are now set to join them in the cast.

Helms is taking over the role of Rusty Griswold, the grown son of Clark (Chevy Chase, who may still cameo with on-screen Vacation wife Beverly D’Angelo) who takes his own family on a road trip.

With John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein – who have been the writers pretty much since the get-go on this one – calling the shots for their joint directorial debut, Day’s presence makes sense. He appeared in both Horrible Bosses films, which they had a script hand in. He’s popping up for a cameo in the film as a river rafting guide who will almost certainly prove to be starttlingly incompetent.

Hemsworth, meanwhile, will be Stone Crandall, an up-and-coming news anchorman who is married to Audrey, Rusty’s sister. Though several actresses have played the role through the years, the current incarnation has yet to be cast.

Daley and Goldstein are scheduled to start the cameras cranking in September. Day is back for Horrible Bosses 2, which lands here on November 28 and will also be seen in John Krasinski’s directorial debut, The Hollars. Hemsworth has worked on Michael Mann’s Blackhat, Ron Howard’s In The Heart Of The Sea and something about a group of heroes we’re struggling to recall at this point. The Scavengers: Beige Of Voltron? It’ll come to us. In any case, you can read about all three of Hemsworth's upcoming films and Horrible Bosses 2 in the October issue of Empire, on shelves from Thursday.
