He may tackle the new horror script
A little more than a month ago, we got wind of Paramount preparing for a third instalment of the Ring horror franchise, once more adapted from the 1998 Japanese creepfest. We noted that the arrival of director F. Javier GutiƩrrez signalled a potential new writer coming aboard and it appears the studio wants Akiva Goldsman to lend his keyboard-mashing abilities to the job.
According to Deadline, The Ring 3D (for such as it is currently called) sees the return of vengeful spirit girl Samara and her cursed video tape, which in this era of viral videos, YouTube sharing and films on phones, seems like a quaintly out-dated idea. Perhaps it’ll either be set back when videos were the thing or it’ll expand the idea to take in some more modern formats. After all, there’s always scope for a cursed set of ice bucket challenge vids.
Goldsman, who last brought the world A New York Winter’s Tale, is listed as being in talks for the Ring script right now. He’s fairly busy on other projects, including his second planned directorial effort, the Blumhouse thriller Stephanie . Perhaps writing a new draft of The Ring’s latest instalment is a possible way for him to flex his horror muscles before he tackles another directing gig.
