To celebrate the 30th anniversary
Though it makes some of us feel particularly old, it really is 30 years this month since Ghostbusters launched in US cinemas before it headed over to the UK in December (yes kids, there really was a time when we had to wait ages for big movies to arrive – ask your parents). To celebrate the anniversary, the film is being re-released again Stateside.
The supernatural comedy classic, which for the three people who don’t know finds paranormal-focused academics Peter Venkman (Bill Murray) Ray Stanz (Dan Aykroyd) and Egon Spengler tossed from their cushy university digs and setting up their own company to capture and control wayward sprits, will be back in American cinemas on August 29 on more than 700 screens. And as part of the 30th anniversary celebrations, other events and merchandise will be available, including a 25th anniversary issue of the sequel. This marks its first time on Blu-ray, boasting new features and deleted scenes, and will hit the streets alongside a combo pack on September 16. That sound you hear is our own Nick DeSemlyen raising a cheer at the sequel hitting high-def shiny disc.
As for UK audiences, there were no details of any plans to re-release the film here, but if the pattern follows the 2011 re-release, we could well see screenings here. We’ve dropped a word to Sony and will update you on any details. Just remember: when someone asks you if you’re a god, you say yes.
