N.W.A. stayed top of the charts at the US box office this weekend, as Straight Outta Compton held on to the number one spot for a second weekend, adding $26.7 million to its coffers, at least according to studio estimates.

Continuing Universal’s successful year, the film – which was financed for $29 million, not counting marketing – has now earned more than $111 million in the US alone, and is still yet to begin most of its international rollout. Clearly, the timing was right for this one, as it saw off all of the new competition. And it wasn’t alone, as Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation clung to second place like Tom Cruise performing a stunt, spending its fourth week in the charts earning $11.7 million for a $157.7 million American total. It still has to go some to match the big earners in the franchise, but clearly this latest entry has legs. Or possibly a secret jetpack.

Of the newcomers, horror sequel Sinister 2 fared best, arriving third with $10.6 million. Given that it comes from the thrifty Blumhouse team, it should show a decent return, even if it’s a drop from the original, which kicked off with $18 million back in 2012. Hitman: Agent 47, the second attempt to turn the Square Enix game into a film (and a franchise), was shot down by some dreadful reviews and apparent audience apathy towards the idea. That $8.2 million opening from 3,261 screens won’t have anyone rushing for the sequel button just yet, but it may end up performing stronger overseas.

The Man From U.N.C.L.E. buckled a little in the face of new competition, falling to fifth from third with $7.4 million and $26.3 million. It’s another one that seems unlikely to kick of a new franchise, but stranger things have happened once all the takings have been tallied. It was still strong enough to see off American Ultra, with the Bourne-meets-stoner comedy stumbling into sixth with $5.5 million.

Psychological thriller The Gift slipped a couple of places to seventh with $4.3 million, but has made more than $31 million from a $5 million budget so far, which means it’s a success for first-time director Joel Edgerton. Ant-Man dropped from sixth to eighth with $4 million, while Minions fell to ninth and $3.7 million. Finally, at 10th, we find the misfiring Fantastic Four, which added $3.6 million for $49.6 million US total. The film has now made a little over $109 million globally, which won’t please the bean counters given its rumoured $120 million plus budget (and that’s without the big marketing campaign costs).
