With the film headed for festivals such as Venice and Toronto, we had thought we might see a trailer for Tom Hooper’s new film, The Danish Girl, which stars Eddie Redmayne and Alicia Vikander. That’s still to arrive, but Focus Features has put the poster online.
The film, a story of identity, art and sensation in mid-20th century Europe, has been simmering away for a number of years. Nicole Kidman, Tomas Alfredson, Gwyneth Paltrow and Charlize Theron have all been linked and unlinked at various stages but now has Redmayne in the title role.
He plays Einar Wegener, a Danish-born artist who was one of the first known people to undergo sex reassignment surgery. Born male, she underwent a series of experimental surgeries in Germany, beginning in 1930 and changed her name to Lili Elbe. Vikander is Wegener's wife, Gerda, who saw their relationship change but always supported Lili, becoming well known herself for the portraits they worked on.
Lucinda Coxon adapted the script, and Amber Heard, Ben Whishaw, Sebastian Koch and Matthias Schoenaerts are among the cast for the drama, which arrives in UK cinemas on January 1.
