Mads Mikkelsen came close to appearing in Thor: The Dark World before his schedule for TV’s Hannibal took him out of contention. But it seems the Marvel Cinematic Universe is not done trying to lure the Danish actor into its clutches, as Variety reports that he’s in early talks to join Doctor Strange.
Exactly what he’ll be up to if he does take the job – and right now it’s still hovering in the “if” zone – has yet to be discovered, though the trade magazine’s sources point to him being another potential threat to Benedict Cumberbatch’s title character.
Dr. Stephen Strange starts his story as a selfish New York surgeon who loses his professional skills in a car crash. After falling on hard times, he ends up in the care of a mystical healer known as the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton), and learns to tap into psychic and magical powers. In recognition of his selfless efforts to thwart evil fellow disciple Baron Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor), he’s taught the mystical arts and sets out to defeat other shady sorcerers and various villains.
Mikkelsen is busy elsewhere in the Disney-owned film role; he’s one of the ensemble for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, with Gareth Edwards busy shooting the movie right now in the UK. Doctor Strange arrives on October 28 2016, while Rogue One will follow it on December 16 the same year.
