Tom Holland Cast As Spider-Man

Tom Holland Cast As Spider-Man

And Jon Watts will direct the first new Spidey film

It’s been a long wait for Sony and Marvel, under the terms of their new Spider-sharing arrangement, to whittle down the list of potential candidates to take over playing Peter Parker and alter ego Spider-Man. But the red web flag is flying over Marvel HQ (or, er, the company just put out a press release), bringing news that The Impossible’s Holland has won the role, signalling that Spider-Man will remain British (sort of) for now.

In related news, director Jon Watts, who has been drawing praise for his work on thriller Cop Car and horror movie Clown, has scored the job of bringing Spider-Man back to the big screen in his next solo adventure. “As with James Gunn, Joss Whedon, and the Russo brothers, we love finding new and exciting voices to bring these characters to life,” says Kevin Feige. “We spent a lot of time with Jon and find his take and work inspiring.”

For Holland, who had long been one of the favourites for the role, it means he’ll be shooting scenes with members of the Avengers for Captain America: Civil War, in which Spider-Man plays an important, if relatively small, role. “Sony, Marvel, Kevin and I all knew that for Peter Parker, we had to find a vibrant, talented young actor capable of embodying one of the most well-known characters in the world,” said producer Amy Pascal. “With Tom, we’ve found the perfect actor to bring Spider-Man’s story into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.”

Captain America: Civil War is scheduled to arrive here on April 29 next year, with the first new Spider-Man film set for July 28, 2018.
