Jerry Bruckheimer's backing a small screen version
Jerry Bruckheimer has been combing through the Paramount libraries again to dig up one of his movies for a new adaptation. In this case, he’s turning 1980 thriller American Gigolo into a TV drama.
The Paul Schrader film starred Richard Gere as Julian, a smooth male escort who makes a good living entertaining rich older ladies in Los Angeles. But around the same time he starts romancing – for real, not money – politician’s wife Michelle (Lauren Hutton), one of Julian’s clients is murdered.
Soon Julian is the prime suspect, and police detective Sunday (Hector Elizondo) starts badgering him for information about his clients. Is Julian being framed? And can he keep the relationship with Michelle going even as his life becomes more chaotic?
What form the show will take has yet to be decided, but Bruckheimer will be an executive producer and Schrader is aboard as a consultant. “With its signature noir aesthetic, American Gigolo has remained a deeply entertaining, psychological thriller and I’m thrilled to partner with Paramount's Brad Grey and Amy Powell on remaking it into a television series,” Bruckheimer tells Variety.
