There are many great names attached to '70s drama 20th Century Women, from writer/director Mike Mills - Thumbsucker, Beginners - to the cast, which already boasts Annette Bening, Elle Fanning and Greta Gerwig. But now comes news that Almost Famous alumnus Billy Crudup is joining movie's imdb page.
Other names to impress include Megan Ellison's Annapurna, the production company behind the project, who you may recognise from their work on the likes of Her, American Hustle and Foxcatcher, but Crudup is what's key, as he's playing the role that the film centres around.
As the boarder living in the bungalow outside single mother Dorothea's (Bening) home, he's the former-hippy-cum-handyman that attracts the attention of not only Bening, but also Fanning and Gerwig. It's 1979, and California's ever-changing seaside town of Santa Barbara is a complicated place to grow up in for Dorothea's teenage son, whose world is changed forever by the arrival of Crudup's character.
“The film is an ode to the women who raised me; my mom, my sisters, the girls I was in love with or looked up to at school and in the punk rock scene where I really learned about the world,” Mills told Variety.
Gerwig portrays a young photographer who has submersed herself in the local punk culture, while Fanning will play a "provative" friend of the son. All will be seen on screen once 20th Century Women's as-yet unannounced release date comes round in 2016.
