We can’t imagine the hard-bitten protagonists of the second True Detective season use a lot of social media – somehow we can’t see an @RayVelcoro out there in the twittersphere – but the HBO marketing department certainly does. It’s used Twitter to debut three new motion posters for the show.

There’s a moodiness to these that mirrors the bluesy teaser trailer we’ve already seen. These men and women exist on either side of the law but are united by the murky Californian netherworld they tread. Colin Farrell is compromised ’tec Ray Velcoro who may or may not be having the whole “we’re not so very different, you and I”-chat with Vince Vaughn’s career crim Frank Semyon somewhere along the way as the show unfolds in the industrial surrounds of Vinci city.
Semyon's wife and closest ally (Kelly Reilly) is also struggling with his choices and her own, with Rachel McAdams' Ani Bezzerides is a county sheriff’s detective at odds with the system she serves. Taylor Kitsch plays Paul Woodrugh, a war veteran and motorcycle cop with the California Highway Patrol.
The latter stumbles upon a crime scene that triggers a massive investigation drawing in three law enforcement groups, a swathe of criminals and billions of dollars. And from the looks of it, this isn’t going to be easy for any of them.
True Detective’s second season, once more written by creator Nic Pizzolatto, will hit HBO on June 21, and will likely show up soon after on Sky Atlantic here.
