“I gave her my heart, she gave me a pen.” You might thing John Cusack’s Lloyd Dobler would be used to heartbreak, though the end of Cameron Crowe’s 1989 classic rom-com Say Anything... seemed to point to a happy ending. Wrongo! According to a new TV series in development, at least.

Deadline reports that American network NBC has ordered a pilot script for a spin-off TV series that picks up the story 10 years later. Lloyd has long since been dumped by Diane Court, and is discovering that life isn’t turning out quite as he hoped. But then the great love of his life unexpectedly returns home, and he’s inspired to win her back.

We’re not entirely convinced that Say Anything... really needed a new chapter, especially not one that will potentially have to fill out several years of small screen story and needs to find people who can match Cusack and Ione Skye. Still, it’s early days and writer Justin Adler was one of the main writers on the criminally underseen and underappreciated comedy Better Off Ted, so it could have promise. That is, of course, assuming its survives US telly’s increasingly cutthroat pilot process…
