George Clooney faces the future

For months now, director Brad Bird and co-writers Damon Lindelof and Jeff Jensen have wrapped a cloak of secrecy around Tomorrowland, the new sci-fi mystery spun from Disney’s past and visions of the future. Now, via Entertainment Weekly, we’re getting a real first look at the film. {Tomorrowland}

Along with the pictures come new – albeit still scanty – details of the plot. Of course, if you’d prefer to stay unsullied on that front, we’d advise you to skip the next couple of paragraphs and remain – as Bird might prefer – on the other side of the curtain.

According to the creative team, Tomorrowland refers to a mysterious place that is being compared to the futuristic equivalent of a certain fantastical institution.

"What Hogwarts is to magic, Tomorrowland is to science: They are both easy to find if you are a wizard and very difficult to find if you’re a Muggle,” Lindelof tells EW. “Walt Disney is not a character in our movie, but he is referenced as having some involvement in this mysterious place called Tomorrowland, as a huge futurist and aficionado of space travel, rocketry, cities of the future, and space travel.”

The hero of the piece is Casey Newton (Britt Robertson) who catches a glimpse of the place and seeks out someone who may know a lot more about it than he’s letting on: Frank Walker (George Clooney), a failed inventor. For more from Lindelof and co., head to EW’s site, where there’s a tease that more from the movie will be coming soon. We’re hoping a trailer follows quickly.

Tomorrowland, which also stars Judy Freer, Kathryn Hahn, Hugh Laurie and Pierce Gagnon, is set to arrive in the UK on May 22 next year.
