Ted 2 bear-ly scrapes into third

Jurassic World has stayed king of the box office. With Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out still snapping at its heels (on a weekly basis, not overall), the dino-filled beast continues to rampage at the top of the US charts, earning a very healthy $54.2 million this weekend, according to studio estimates.

The film took another record, becoming the fastest film to cross $500 million at the US domestic box office, and is riding high globally too, passing $1.2 billion worldwide and showing little sign of slowing down yet. But Disney’s still happy with Pixar’s latest, which took in an impressive $52.1 million in its second weekend for a $184.94 total to date.

Universal had some less exciting news from one of its new arrivals, as raunchy comedy Ted 2 failed to deliver on what was anticipated as a $50 million plus opening, struggling into third with $33 million. It’s a little disappointing given that the first Ted opened at $54 million back in 2012 and went on to make nearly $550 million worldwide. The sequel will need to show some serious legs to get anywhere near that, and it’s far from encouraging for Seth MacFarlane in the wake of last year’s disappointing A Million Ways To Die In The West. Still, $33 million is hardly chump change.

In fourth was Warner Bros.’ Max, attempting to leverage the attraction of animals – in this case, heroic military service dogs – for some family business. But the continued domination of Jurassic World and Inside Out meant it had to make do with $12.2 million, though admittedly that was more than expected and the movie’s relatively efficient $20 million budget means it has a shot at making money. In fifth, Paul Feig and Melissa McCarthy’s action comedy Spy added $7.8 million for $88.3 million.

San Andreas was pushed down from fourth to sixth, taking in $5.2 million, while Dope fell to seventh and $2.8 million. Insidious Chapter 3 was eighth with $2 million, with Mad Max: Fury Road driving down to ninth and $1.7 million and Avengers: Age Of Ultron preparing to leave the top 10 with $1.6 million on its ninth week of release.
